The Internal Revenue Service has retired its long-standing IRS2Go mobile application, replacing it with a modernized software platform titled simply IRS. First introduced in 2011, the legacy mobile tool offered basic utilities such as refund tracking and general agency updates. The new release expands mobile account functionality, enabling taxpayers to complete a wider range of self-service tasks and securely view individual account details directly from mobile devices.
Under the updated application, taxpayers can access key account information that previously required desktop access or paper requests. Available self-service features include viewing official tax records and transcripts, checking account balances, inspecting payment histories, and reading selected agency notices and letters. Users can also obtain identity protection PINs, submit payments, check the status of original or amended returns, and adjust specific communication settings.
This launch directly affects individual taxpayers, real estate owners, and self-employed professionals who need quick mobile access to tax records and payment status. However, federal officials emphasized that the mobile software does not replace IRS.gov or existing web platforms. Completing comprehensive tasks within business tax accounts, tax professional accounts, or full individual online accounts still requires accessing the agency website through a web browser.
For taxpayers, the concrete practical implication is easier mobile monitoring of ongoing account activity, such as verifying that quarterly estimated tax payments have posted without needing desktop computer access. Taxpayers currently using IRS2Go with automatic application updates enabled will receive the new app automatically, while new users can download it through verified mobile app stores. The tax agency advised taxpayers to avoid look-alike applications and fraudulent links, reiterating that official representatives do not request sensitive personal or financial credentials via unsolicited text messages or emails.
